Welcome to Chilham Castle

Welcome

There has been a castle at the site of Chilham, on the edge of a wood, in the heart of Kent, for at least thirteen centuries.

It has changed hands many times, having been home to a host of colourful and sometimes eccentric families.  Held from time to time by Kings of England, it was also once occupied, briefly, by the heir to the French throne on his way to invade London (he wasn't successful).

The house that was built in 1616 on the site of the ancient castle, and bears its name, has since 2002 been the home of Stuart and Tessa Wheeler.  See more about them and their restoration of the house in About Chilham Castle.

Tessa and Stuart are delighted to have on this site a comprehensive history of Chilham Castle – the first for many years - and are extremely grateful to the author, Michael Peters, who has dedicated five years' exhaustive research to the task.  If you can add anything more about the castle's history, please get in touch with Mr. Peters. Under Events we have an up-to-date calendar of garden openings and equestrian events in the park.

The Castle is occasionally available to rent for private functions.
Details can be found in the 'Corporate Functions' section of this site.
