Photographer Tessa Codrington lived at Chilham Castle from 2002 until her death in 2016. Tessa first visited Tangier in 1953 at the age of 9 to stay with her grandfather, Jack Sinclair. Tessa later inherited his house and split her time between England and Tangier throughout her life.
Her photo book Spirits of Tangier, 2008, is an intimate portrait of the town since 1953 and some its most well-known inhabitants. Portraits include the writers Paul and Jane Bowles, painter Marguerite McBey, antique dealer Christopher Gibbs, the Hon. David Herbert, Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton, playwright Tennessee Williams and the artist Claudio Bravo.
