Chilham Castle

Garden Open Day & Cake Sale for Lombok Earthquake Victims

On Tuesday 25th September 2018 Chilham Castle will be opening the gardens in aid of the earthquake victims in Lombok. Lalu, one of our gardeners comes from the Indonesian island of Lombok, badly affected by ongoing earthquakes, which started in August 2018. The Northern and Central regions of the island have been devastated, more than 500 people have died and hundreds of thousands have been made homeless. The rainy season is fast approaching and families urgently need earthquake-resistant shelters. In addition much of the water supply in the region has been contaminated and so large water storage tanks also need to be distributed.

In addition to the vital aid required, Lalu would also like to support a project, to build a community garden attached to a school in one of the worst affected areas to specifically help children cope with their trauma, and the transition back to a normal life.

All monies raised will be sent via their crowdfunding page directly to the people on the ground in Lombok who are helping vital supplies get through. They in turn, will spend the money in local markets, where trade has been badly hit.

Lalu’s wife, Liz, will be running a cake sale on the day and we very much hope you can visit the gardens and eat some cake whilst supporting the communities in Lombok.

Entry to the Garden – Adult £5 : Concessions £4 : Children under 5 FREE

All entry fees and cake sale proceeds will be donated directly to Lombok by the above crowdfunder link.
