There has been a castle at the site of Chilham, on the edge of a wood, in the heart of Kent, for over eight centuries; perhaps thirteen or more. It has changed hands many times, having been home to a host of colourful and sometimes eccentric families. Held from time to time by Kings of England, it was also once occupied, briefly, by the heir to the French throne on his way to invade London (he wasn’t successful). The house that was built in 1616 on the site of the ancient castle, and bears its name, has since 2002 been the home of Stuart and Tessa Wheeler.
Chilham Castle’s gardens are part of a private home, so are not open to the public on a daily basis. Garden open days are held on the second Tuesday of every month between April and September and on annual NGS days http://www.ngs.org.uk
One of the many joys of hiring Chilham Castle is that you’re free to plan and design your own event, so it’s entirely personal and unique. With such a large site, we’re lucky not to have restrictions on numbers in the grounds. We’ve held some fabulous weddings, as well as business conferences and balls.
For smaller get-togethers, we can offer the main hall of the house (up to 70) or even our own dining room, which seats 20. It is sometimes possible to use the services of our own chef.
Tours last about 3 hours in all for groups of 25 to 30 – or coach parties up to 50.
